Why We Started Kinkerbox: Curiosity, Kink and Doing Things Differently
Why We Started Kinkerbox
Hi, we’re Sophie and Alex, and we started Kinkerbox because we thought exploring kink should feel a lot less intimidating.
There are thousands of sex toys out there, hundreds of brands and entire websites full of products in shapes you may or may not immediately understand. That’s brilliant if you already know exactly what you want. But what if you don’t? What if you’re curious about kink, you know there are things you’d like to explore, but you have absolutely no idea where to start?
That was the gap we wanted Kinkerbox to fill.
We wanted somewhere for the curious
Kink can sometimes feel like a world you either understand or you don’t. You’re either vanilla, or you’re fully dressed in latex and already know the difference between every kind of restraint, rope and impact toy going.
In reality, most people sit somewhere in between.
You might be curious about being tied up but have no interest in pain. You might fancy trying a blindfold, exploring pegging, experimenting with impact play or simply making sex feel a bit more exciting. You might not even know what you’re curious about yet.
That’s completely fine. In fact, that curiosity is exactly where Kinkerbox began.
We wanted to create somewhere that made it easy to say, “I don’t know exactly what I’m into yet, but I’d quite like to find out.”
We didn’t think more choice was always better
A lot of online sex shops work on the same principle: more products, more pages, more versions of essentially the same thing. We wanted to do something different.
Kinkerbox has always been about curation. We would rather show you products we genuinely think are worth discovering than make you scroll through thousands of things just because we can list them.
That thinking led to our original personalised Kinkerboxes. You tell us what you like, what you’re curious about, what is completely off the table and how Mild or Wild you’re feeling, and we do the searching for you.
It takes some of the pressure out of choosing, and hopefully makes trying something new feel exciting rather than overwhelming.
Exploring kink should actually be fun
There can be a strange seriousness around kink. Some of that is important, particularly when it comes to consent, communication and safety, but exploration itself should also be fun.
You’re allowed to laugh. You’re allowed to change your mind. You’re allowed to try something and decide it isn’t for you, or discover that you love something you never expected to.
You also don’t need to adopt a particular label or identity before you’re allowed to be curious, that became one of the most important ideas behind Kinkerbox. No judgement, no pressure and no expectation that everybody’s version of kink should look the same.
From Mild to Wild. You Decide.
That phrase became part of Kinkerbox because it sums up exactly what we believe. There is no correct level of kink. For one person, putting on a blindfold might feel wildly adventurous. For somebody else, that barely registers. Neither person is doing it better.
We’re not here to push anyone further than they want to go. We’re here to make it easier to explore whatever your version of interesting happens to be, whether that means starting very gently or going somewhere considerably wilder.
Kinkerbox has grown with us
Kinkerbox started with personalised boxes, but the idea behind it was always bigger than a box arriving through the post.
Over time, we’ve added our Shibari Shop, Kinkerbox Originals, our own lightly hand-treated jute ropes, a growing main shop and Handpicked by Kinkerbox, where we bring together brands we genuinely rate for their design, quality and attitude.
We also created the Kinkerblog because sometimes the thing that helps you explore isn’t a product at all. Sometimes it’s information, reassurance or simply discovering that something you’ve been wondering about is considerably more normal than you thought.
The shop has grown, but the purpose hasn’t really changed. We still want to make discovering kink feel easier.
What we want Kinkerbox to become
We don’t want Kinkerbox to become the biggest sex shop on the internet. That isn’t the point. We want it to become the place you trust to help you discover.
Somewhere that feels stylish without being clinical, sexy without being sleazy, and knowledgeable without taking itself too seriously. A place for people who know exactly what they want, and people who haven’t got the faintest idea yet.
Because curiosity is a very good place to start.
We’re Sophie and Alex. We started Kinkerbox to make exploring kink feel easier, more personal and considerably more fun.
Where you go from there is entirely up to you.
From Mild to Wild. You Decide.
